AU adopts resolution classifying slavery, deportation and colonialism as crimes against humanity, praises Algeria's role ADDIS ABABA - The African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government adopted Sunday, in Addis Ababa, a resolution classifying slavery, deportation and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against the peoples of Africa, while commending Algeria's efforts in this regard. The African Union adopted the resolution on the final day of its 39th ordinary Summit, emphasizing the necessity for Member States to work together in solidarity and collectively to secure international recognition for these crimes, while deciding to keep the matter under its consideration. The African Union lauded the progress made by Member States and the African Union Commission and its relevant bodies in the implementation of Decision 934. In this regard, it cited Algeria's organization of the International Conference on the Crimes of Colonialism in Africa, held in Algiers from November 30 to December 1, 2025. It should be noted that the draft resolution, which classifies slavery, deportation, and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against Africa's peoples, was formally introduced by the Republic of Togo.
