Algeria-Burkina Faso (Group E/Day 2): The Greens eye Round of 16 qualification
RABAT - The national football team will face Burkina Faso on Sunday at 6:00 p.m., with the goal of securing a Round of 16 spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the second match day of Group E unfolds.
After a successful start marked by a dominant 3-0 victory against Sudan on Wednesday, the Greens are determined to build on their momentum and advance to the knockout stages. The team aims to return to the Round of 16, a stage they have not reached since their continental triumph in 2019 in Egypt, where they defeated Senegal 1-0 to claim the title.
For Captain Riyad Mahrez and his teammates, the objective is clear: the squad is targeting a second consecutive win to guarantee qualification before their final group stage match against Equatorial Guinea, scheduled for Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
Remaining composed and analytical, national coach Vladimir Petkovic was careful to temper any euphoria following the opening victory. He stressed that "the second match against Burkina Faso will be different, with a Round of 16 spot at stake. There are areas to improve, but the most important priority now is recovery."
Regarding squad updates, the entire group is fit with no injuries reported as both starters and substitutes are fully operational for this pivotal match. Notably, Paris FC defender Samir Chergui has rejoined the group following an injury layoff.
On the tactical front, some adjustments are expected, particularly in midfield, as the staff seeks to maintain the balance between defensive discipline and attacking efficiency.
