Agriculture: Priority to intensify production, support strategic segments ALGIERS - Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid on Monday said that the agriculture sector attaches great importance to intensifying national production and supporting the strategic segments, through a series of measures to enhance productivity and develop the farming system in a holistic manner. The statement was made by the agriculture minister at a hearing before the Finance and Budget Committee of the People's National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), chaired by Mohamed Benhachem, the committee's chairman, in the presence of Minister for Relations with Parliament Najiba Djilali, as part of the examination of the 2026 Finance Bill. Oualid said the sector's efforts will focus on supporting inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, developing agricultural irrigation and mechanization, in addition to developing training programs, technical support, and agricultural guidance, and improving the control system and protecting farmers' incomes. The minister emphasized that the sector gives great importance to supporting modern technologies and equipment that contribute to improving and developing the production process, promoting the transition to modern, more efficient, and sustainable farming. Among the strategic objectives for the agricultural sector, the minister mentioned reducing dependence on imports of cereals and pulses by increasing productivity and yields, expanding irrigated areas, promoting the use of water-efficient irrigation systems, and developing strategic crops in the country's south. He particularly cited activities aimed at breaking isolation and connecting agricultural investments to electricity networks. The minister highlighted the outcomes of the national conference on modernization of agriculture, held on October 27-28, which culminated in "300 recommendations to make agriculture an economic driver based on digitalization and technology."
