UN chief congratulates Algeria on peaceful conduct of legislative elections

NEW YORK- United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday has congratulated Algeria on the "peaceful conduct" of the 4 May legislative elections, said his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric in a statement.

The Secretary General "notes" the announcement by the Constitutional Council of the results of the 4 May 2017 elections and "would welcome any further steps the Government and all stakeholders can take to continue to strengthen the democratic process," added the spokesperson.

The UN deployed a group of electoral observers to Algeria from 28 April to 7 May 2017, at the invitation of the Algerian Government.

According to the final results announced Thursday by the Constitutional Council, the National Liberation Front (FLN) remains in the lead with 161 seats.
