Suspension of schooling undermines principle of equity and generates inequalities

TIZI-OUZOU (Algeria)- Suspension of schooling on a quasi-regular basis "undermines the principle of equity and generates inequalities" among the learners," Minister of National Education Nouria Benghebrit said Saturday.

Benghebrit, on a two-day working visit to the province of Tizi-Ouzou (103-km east of Algiers), said at a meeting with local Education executives that the continuous and regular disruption of schooling, "whatever the legitimacy and the reasons given, undermines the principle of equal opportunities the State ensures through the mobilization of the required human, material and infrastructural resources."

"Strikes undermine the principle of equality among pupils, which is one of the foundations of our education system," the minister said.

She noted that during school strikes, "those who have the means get fee-based courses, which become more expensive during strikes, and those who cannot offer such courses are lagging behind."

In addition, work stoppages by teachers badly affect national education at the international level, in terms of the number of teaching weeks, the minister said.

 



They also deprive learners from the required skills in the coming stages of their education, Benghebrit said, urging for a "burst of conscience and a positive mobilization ensuring a regular schooling to improve Algerian school's position in world rankings."

The minister said such instability has had a bad impact on the education of pupils and the training the ministry provide to teachers.
