Four new cancer centres to be operational in 2018

ALGIERS- Four new cancer centres will be operational in 2018, bringing to 17 the total number of centres nationwide, announced Sunday, in Algiers, Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform Mokhtar Hasbellaoui. 

Speaking on the occasion of the celebration of the World Cancer Day, placed this year under the theme “I can, we can beat cancer,” Hasbellaoui underlined that four cancer centres in El Oued, Bechar, Adrar and Tizi Ouzou will be operational in 2018, bringing to 17 the total number of cancer centres nationwide.

“Under the national cancer plan 2015-2018, the year 2018 is for Algeria the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to fighting cancer and other non-communicable diseases,” he added.

“Improving medical oncology offer is reflected today through the existence of 41 services and 77 functional units covering the 48 provinces with the availability of oncology drugs, while the improvement of radiotherapy offer is reflected through the existence of 36 functional linear accelerators, including ten at the level of the private sector against seven accelerators in 2013,” said the minister.

In addition to this, twelve other accelerators are being installed at the level of four cancer centres which will be operational in 2018, which will help bringning waiting times to the “best international standards,” he concluded.

In terms of availability of medicines, the minister emphasized the financial efforts made by the State, underlining that “more than DZD37 billion were mobilized for the purchase of haematology and cancer medicines, representing 60% of the total purchases of the hospital central pharmacy for the year 2017.”
