First offshore oil drilling planned for H2 2019

HOUSTON (United States)- Sonatrach is expected to start offshore  oil exploration in 2019 with a first drilling in the second half off the eastern coast between Bejaia and Skikda, the Houston-based oil-gas group said in the 12th Algerian-US Energy Forum.

The acquisition of 2D and 3D seismic data will be completed in the first half of 2019, Youcef Khanfar, head of the New Resources Department at Sonatrach, told the forum on Algeria's offshore oil potential, adding that the total volume of the first oil wells is estimated at several trillions of cubic meters of biogenic gas.

The country's western coast may also contain oil, with a planned extraction of many millions of barrels from the first wells to be drilled in this area.

Prospecting in the eastern and western coasts is carried out in partnership with French TOTAL and Italian ENI.
