Subsidies will be removed gradually, says Benmeradi

ORAN- The removal of State's subsidies will be "gradual" through tests conducted by region, category of households, product and according to the income of consumers, said Minister of Trade Mohamed Benmeradi on Thursday in Oran (431-km west of Algiers).

In a press briefing on the sidelines of his working visit to Oran, Benmeradi said that subsidies would not be removed "all at once" but after a survey of households and according to the income of consumers and regions.

"Subsidies on basic foodstuffs would not be affected," he stressed.

In this regard, he said that the Ministry of Finance and all departments concerned have been working on the issue for a year, adding "they are progressing well."

"Some subsidies on fuels have been already removed and the rest will be gradually done. Nevertheless, the subsidy removal will be preceded by a series of measures, with a view to increasing consumers' awareness regarding the new mode of consumption," said Benmeradi.

As regards consumer protection, "bills are under consideration at the People's National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament). These bills aim at establishing product standards and compliance," explained the minister.
