Over the past weeks, "multiple physical and verbal assaults were committed on medical, paramedical and administrative staff, and citizens inside hospitals and healthcare facilities. In some cases, public properties and medical materials have been destroyed," said the source.
In the face of "this situation, the President of the Republic has decided to consolidate and reinforce, through a bill, the protection of all the medical, paramedical and administrative personnel, in addition to that enshrined by the Laws of the Republic."
The bill aims at "protecting the medical personnel from all kinds of assault and violence, whatever its form, means or authors, inside hospitals and other health structures and establishments across the national territory, during the exercise of their noble mission," added the same source.
The Minister of Justice, the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning, the Commander of the National Gendarmerie, the Director General of National Police and the Governors "were instructed to take all the necessary measures, in the light of the guidelines of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, for the strict application of the law and the immediate implementation of the most severe sanctions against the perpetrators of such acts of violence."
The Prime Minister’s Office also said that images and footages are manipulated and disseminated via social networks and media, which undermine the dignity of patients and their families, as well as the professionalism and moral integrity of the medical personnel.
"These unacceptable acts which objective is to jeopardize the security and integrity of persons and public property, and whose authors vainly try to discredit the action of the public health service and the efforts deployed and sacrifices made by all the healthcare staff, are punished by the laws of the Republic," underlined the same source.
These acts which are "foreign to our society and rejected by it, are extremely serious amid the economic situation in the country, where all efforts must be directed and focused on the care of the sick and the health protection of our fellow citizens, facing the Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19)".
