Algeria will not agree to host illegal immigrant centres

ALGIERS- Algeria will not agree to host centres for illegal immigrants, said Sunday in Algiers Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning Noureddine Bedoui.

"Algeria has clearly expressed its refusal to host centres for illegal migrants on its territory, I think we have been clear about this," Bedoui told the press on the sidelines of the 6th session of Algeria-Niger Border Committee.

He explained that Algeria's position "is known as it has been expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs," adding that the Government's position "is clear" on the issue of migration.

"We have mobilized huge means and we have taken many measures while ensuring respect for international humanitarian values," he said.

"There is no possibility that Algeria would open any immigrant centre," said Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel in an interview with RFI in June.

In this regard, Messahel underlined that Algeria "is facing same problems as Europe. We have conducted repatriation operations in accordance with arrangements made with neighbouring countries."

"When it comes to the issue of illegal migration, things must be well understood," he stressed.
