ALGIERS- Algeria has saved 14,000 African migrants (women and children), exploited in begging by a criminal gang from Niger, said Thursday in Algiers an official from the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning.

"We have saved 14,000 African women and children from the clutches of a Nigerien criminal gang, who exploited this vulnerable people in begging throughout the national territory," the Director of Studies on Migration at the Interior Ministry, Hacene Kacimi told a press conference.

He said that the Government has taken several measures to address the illegal migration issue.

The President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Prime minister and the Minister of Interior consider this issue as a "national priority," he added.

"The Government attaches great importance to the humanitarian dimension," said Kacimi, denying the allegations by some parties and international organizations regarding Algeria's handling of the migration issue.

In this regard, he underlined that Algeria has always showed solidarity with African countries, by sending humanitarian aid and cancelling the debt of 14 African countries, amounting to US$3.5 billion, over the past five years.
