Revision of Criminal Procedure Code: New measures to guarantee individual freedoms

ALGIERS- The amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code, presented Tuesday at the People's National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) has introduced new measures to enhance the individual freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, through the revision of the provisions relating to criminal record, rehabilitation and imprisonment for debt.

Minister of Justice Tayeb Louh, presenting the draft amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), said the revision of some provisions relating to criminal record, rehabilitation and imprisonment for debt are part of the justice reform, in the light of newly introduced alternative penalties.

The move, the minister said, is meant to boost and protect the rights of the defendants and uphold the principles in force worldwide, especially those relating to human rights.

The presentation of the draft amendments was followed by the interventions of MPs, all of whom welcomed the suggested amendments, stressing their positive impact on individual freedoms.

Louh is expected to reply to the concerns (49) rose by the members of Parliament by the end of the day.
